Killian Smith BE,CEng MIEI
Managing Director
Killian is a Chartered Civil Engineer who obtained an Honours Degree after graduating from the University of Ulster. He also holds a Postgraduate Diploma in International Selling from Technological University Dublin.
Killian joined Cleantech Civils in 2001, and in less than a decade stepped into his current role as Managing Director. Killian is passionate about growing Cleantech Civils into a dynamic, progressive organisation that has the power to effectively break into and dominate new geographic sectors. He believes that to be able to achieve the goals, mission, and vision of Cleantech Civils, every team member, be they upper-level management or entry-level personnel, must deeply understand the performance standards, operating objectives, and goals for the company. Killian strives to lead, guide, and motivate his teams to create a safe working environment where innovation can thrive.
Declan Smith, BE
Operations Director
After joining Cleantech Civils in 1997, Declan Smith rose through the ranks of Site Engineer, Project Manager, Contracts Manager and, eventually, Operations Director in 2010.
Like Killian, Declan holds an Honours degree in Engineering obtained from the University of Ulster. Declan is also IOSH qualified and uses his skills, experience, and insight to provide invaluable guidance to our team members and our civil engineering projects in Ireland and the UK. Declan’s hands-on approach and exceptional inter- and intrapersonal communication skills are some of the reasons why he is able to develop various teams’ abilities to tap into their full potential. His responsibilities extend to managing, delivering, and completing various civil engineering projects in Ireland and the UK in the private and public sectors. Thanks to his experience and insight, Declan is able to fulfil his role while making sure that each project is completed on time, within budget, and in accordance with the requirements of the health and safety, quality and environmental regulations.
Gavin Smith, BSc
Commercial Director
With more than 22 years of construction and civil engineering experience, Gavin is an invaluable member of the Cleantech Civils team. Gavin holds a postgraduate diploma from Trinity College Dublin in Construction Law and Contract Administration.
He has a diploma in Construction Economics and Management from LIT and he completed a BSc in Quantity Surveying. Gavin prefers a collaborative approach to costing, planning, and mitigating risks for various civil engineering projects in Ireland and the UK. Thanks to his experience and skills, he’s the ideal team member to oversee and manage all the financial resources for Cleantech Civils. He takes pride in providing his team with the clarity, guidance and customer-focused results.
Declan O’Dea, BE, MIEI
Estimating Manager
Declan O’Dea holds an Honours Degree obtained from NUI Galway in Civil Engineering. After graduating in 2003, he’s gained invaluable experience in the industry. His background includes managing projects at a Tier 1 Civil Engineering firm in Ireland, he joined Cleantech Civils in 2011 in the role of Project Manager.
In 2017, Declan was appointed as the estimating manager thanks to his incredible work ethic and unique insight into developing accurate cost proposals that take the right construction timescales and risk analysis techniques into consideration. Declan delivers projects for the public and private sectors that focus on water and wastewater services, built environment, and energy. Declan is responsible for overseeing and managing commercial performance, where he works closely with various teams including procurement, Human Resources and HSQE departments.
John O’Grady, BSc, Dip
HSEQ Manager
John has a Bachelor of Agri-Environmental Science and a Diploma in Health, Safety and Welfare in the workplace.
He is passionate about Continuous Professional Development and diligently develops training plans for our personnel.
John uses her experience, insight, and leadership in the ZERO programme to ensure that each project complies with all health and safety and environmental regulations. He also continues to monitor the company’s ongoing compliance with ISO 45001, ISO 14001 and ISO 9001. John is involved in the continuous improvement of our mWorkers app and utilises this tool to review and monitor HSEQ information in real time.
Aaron Nutt, BSc
Contracts Manager (Scotland)
Aaron holds a BSc Honours in Environmental Science from the University of East Anglia. He has spent more than 18 years delivering high-quality engineering services in the UK and Australia.
His career started in Environmental Science, yet quickly evolved to include project and contracts management, before he eventually stepped into the role of civils and construction manager. Aaron is motivated, dedicated, and passionate about providing key solutions that help our clients solve their most pressing concerns. He believes that his role challenges him to work with his teams to deliver high-quality engineering services to those who need them.
Darren Cahill, BE
Contracts Manager (England)
Darren holds an Honours Degree in Construction Management obtained from the Limerick Institute of Technology. Before this, however, Darren graduated with a Certificate in Construction Studies from the Regional Technical College in Galway.
After receiving his certification, Darren spent 12 years working in the industry before returning to his studies. Today, Darren has more than two decades of experience in delivering high-quality engineering services in Ireland and the UK. He believes that through continuous personal and professional development of the teams and personnel in the company, they can create endless innovative solutions for their industry.
Cillín Owens, BE
Contracts Manager (Ireland)
Cillín holds a degree in Civil Engineering obtained from Queen’s University Belfast. In the past 25 years, Cillín has delivered a variety of engineering projects in Ireland and has confidently progressed from Site Engineer to Contracts Manager.
Cillín is passionate about driving innovation to promote change and development within the engineering industry. With his experience, insight, and qualifications, Cillín has proved himself an invaluable part of the Cleantech Civils leadership team.
