Bindoo 48MW Wind Farm

Client:SSE Airtricity
Main Contractor & PSCS:Lagan Contracts
Location:Co. Cavan

Located in Cootehill, Co Cavan, this wind farm is made up of 32 turbines. As a green energy powerhouse, it electrifies some 30,000 homes and mitigates 120,000 tons of carbon dioxide annually. We took special care to maintain the local ecosystem, and to uphold the green energy reputation this wind farm had built for itself.

Key Features of our Scope of Works

  • Turbine bases: 32 No. for 1.5MW G.E. wind turbine generators (each base included approx. 220m³ of concrete and approx. 20T of steel).
  • Cable and ducting: 26km of cable and ducting laid in loops through public roads and fields.
  • Site access roads: 11km of new site access roads were developed through challenging ground conditions.
  • An additional 4km of public road modification was required including realigning junctions and bends on the R16.

How Cleantech Civils Added Value

As a local contractor, we liaised with the community, who were concerned that our works were going to negatively affect their area. Our quality service reputation and family value principles ensured confidence to the local community that we could provide the great service. We did manage to proactively mitigate their concerns.

Our Cleantech Civils quarry supplied concrete to a pour in each of the bases. Our procurement team organised the coordination and delivery of crucial materials. Due to our local knowledge of the complexity and the insufficient capacity of the local roads network to accommodate HGV vehicles, we developed a plan to accommodate HGV vehicles operating on nearby roads. With local authority approvals and the necessary permits, we created a strategic borrow pit that serviced all turbine sites. We acquired the stone needed to make turbine access roads, crane hardstands, and road widenings. The use of smaller plant like tractor and trailers were more accommodating on the roads and for the residents in the area.

Permits were also acquired to dispose of unsuitable materials, which cut down the time that HGV vehicles spent on local roads. After our work was completed, the landscape was restored – with a higher agricultural value than before. All in all, we took extra care to maintain the balance between our work and the ecosystem. At Cleantech Civils, we value natural conservation, and natural/construction synergy.

Our client requested project acceleration, and we delivered. We managed to deliver new Plant and Labour and maintain the local eco-system, all while delivering on an earlier date than expected – some six months in advance. We have our dedicated staff members and project managers to thank for this feat.
