This substation is an energy-producing colossus. Located in Ballyshannon, County Donegal, the dam has two sets of turbo-alternators. Each of them has an output of 22.5mw under a 29m head of water. In tandem, both turbo-alternators supply over 26,000 homes with electricity. An additional 400kw generator supplies power for local utilisation – making the full Cathaleens Fall setup an integral part of the nation’s electricity grid.

How Cleantech Civils Added Value
Our highly qualified engineers and project managers are specialised to work in “live environments”. We had to link old and new developments for our project to succeed. It was a necessity for the ESB Substation to be fully operational at all times.
This operation threw several challenges in our way. However, we outleapt our hurdles with a robust in-house team, a commitment to high levels of quality service, and a focus on worker and community safety – as we do with each project. Communication formed the backbone of our project. We relayed our program of work to the on-site team daily, so that we could meet our milestones, recalibrate (when necessary), and avoid hazards.
Each task was completed on time, within allocated switch out dates. The project was delivered to our client earlier than expected, adding to our track record of quality delivery. Our high-quality engineering services helped to make this operation a resounding success.
Cathleen Falls is a vital piece of infrastructure for the entire North-West of Ireland. With our service, ESBN was able to supply its customers with an uninterrupted supply of power. We are proud that we were able to keep the lights on amidst upgrades to this key substation.
