In partnership with the Cavan County Council and Coillte (Ireland’s commercial forestry business) we set out to deliver a sustainable tourist facility. The two parties shared the collective vision of setting up a flagship site for West Cavern’s Marble Arch Caves Global Geopark, a hub of interactive education on the surrounding environment. The Cleantech Civils team was appointed as Design & Build contractor, and we wasted no time in getting to work to ensure that the sustainable vision of Coillte and the Council could come to fruition.

How Cleantech Civils Added Value
This construction project presented a unique challenge to the Cleantech Civils team as we were dealing with relatively unchartered territory. The park contained a vast number of geological and archaeological features, not to mention delicate forestry, water courses, and wildlife that could not be disrupted or interrupted.
We knew from the beginning that we would need to be cognisant of these environmental aspects, ensuring our work did not interfere with or negatively impact the sensitive ecosystems of the area. We also had to deal with adverse weather complications that compromised the integrity of our planning – not to mention work in an area graced by the presence of hillwalkers every day.
We worked closely with various specialists on the site, including a geologist, ecologist, and archaeologist, in order to ensure a flawless approach from start to finish while leaving all surrounding habitats and artefacts intact. We also ensured that the public could continue to safely enjoy access to the area’s egress routes at all times in this live environment.
Aside from the successful design and construction of this project, we as a team also gained the opportunity to nurture our own environmental and ecological skillsets. We quickly determined the need to construct the trails with a small construction plant, owing to the site’s sensitivity. In relation to the timber surfaced boardwalks, these trails further needed to be constructed by hand – calling for more innovation on what was typically labour intensive work. Through collaboration with the client, and carefully planning this construction project was delivered successfully.
