Gweedore Sewerage Scheme

Client:Irish Water
Main Contractor & PSCS & PSDP:Cleantech Civils
Location:Gweedore, Co. Donegal

Cleantech Civils were commissioned to carry out the demonstration project for a Low-Pressure Sewerage (LPS) System in the Gweedore region. Our highly qualified engineers and project managers immediately got to work analysing and assessing the project’s intricacies, which revealed the need for minor civil, mechanical, and electrical installations spanning 38No. residential and 3No. commercial premises. Needless to say, coordinating works and teams in private properties is no easy feat, particularly when many of these property-owners speak a different language. A successful outcome would depend heavily on meticulous planning of high-quality engineering services – so that’s exactly what we did!

Key Features of our Scope of Works

  • Installation of LPS systems to 38 houses in Gweedore, RTE radio station, a pub and the local theatre.
  • Installation of pump assemblies. The installation incorporates a collection tank, pump unit with associated controls, pipework fittings and components, pipework boundary isolation box and a control panel linked to an integrated control system.
  • Diversion of existing foul drains away from the existing septic tank to the new collection tank.
  • Diversion of storm drains to existing septic tank where the system has been separated.
  • Rehabilitation of existing foul and storm pipework and manholes.
  • Connection of 40mm pressure main from new collection tank to property boundary box, provided by Irish Water (IW) located close to the property boundary.
  • Connection of the branch main (installed by the network contractor) outside the property boundary wall to the property boundary box.
  • Reinstatement of lawns, grass verges and hardstand areas such as concrete, tarmac and gravel.
  • Electrical, automation and telemetry work including installation of new control panel (provided by IW) and connection to existing electrical fuse board within each property.
  • Testing and commissioning of all works, including pressure testing of mains.
  • Provision of associated specialist and ancillary related works.

How Cleantech Civils Added Value

Going the extra mile for engineering projects in Ireland is in our nature, which is why we built a bilingual team fluent in Gaelic, the language primarily used in this Gaeltacht area. This way, we could communicate in the property owners’ mother tongue, one of these property owners had this to say:

“From day one, I found Cleantech Civil’s Project Manager to be very professional, well-mannered, and approachable. He explained everything that needed to be done in great detail, from beginning to end, and step by step. His team did an excellent job laying the pipes, and they left my area just as they found it.”

– LPS & Property Owner, Gweedore Resident.

We also needed to work around unfavourable ground conditions caused by extreme weather conditions. This made the reinstatement works implausible as per the original program, meaning we would need to delay the project to a time when weather and ground conditions were more constructive to the desired outcome.

Thankfully, through strong communication and relationships between our team and the local residents, this was not a problem.

Before long, the demonstration project went ahead, with the purpose of reducing the area’s reliance on septic tank systems – which was 100% achievable thanks to our highly qualified engineers and project managers’ deep expertise, extensive experience, unwavering professionalism, and pure passion for building personal relationships with everyone affected by our work
