Lough Mask Water Treatment Plant – Phase 2 Upgrade

Lough Mask Water Treatment Plant – Phase 2 Upgrade

Client:Uisce Éireann
Main Contractor & PSCS:Veolia Water Ireland Ltd
Location:Tourmakeady, Co. Mayo

The plant serves the Lough Mask Regional Water Supply Scheme. The upgrade improves security of supply and tackles plumbosolvency in the network, so customers across Co. Mayo get safe, high-quality drinking water that complies with current drinking water regulations. Cleantech Civils were commissioned by Veolia on this Uisce Éireann project to deliver the civil, structural and building works for the Phase 2 Upgrade of Lough Mask Water Treatment Plant.

Key Features of our Scope of Works

  • Site preparation and set-up of the site compound
  • Construction of temporary haul roads around the site
  • Earthworks and civils for the coagulation tank, backwash and chemical tanks, 2 no. washwater tanks, sludge and balance tanks, and associated smaller tanks
  • Hydrostatic testing of all completed tanks before handover
  • Foundations and concrete slab for the new storage building
  • Structural steelwork, cladding and roofing for the storage building
  • Installation of 1,500m of ductile iron pipework, with connections to new and existing infrastructure
  • Installation of 1,000m of electrical ducting throughout the treatment plant
  • Complete surface water drainage network, including manholes, pipework, petrol interceptors, chambers, attenuation system, road gullies and ACO drains
  • Refurbishment and fit-out of the existing control building, including wall partitions, floor coverings, ceilings, bathroom fit-out, new roof and window replacement
  • All civil completion works, including road surfacing, slabs and footpaths
  • Hard and soft landscaping across the entire water treatment plant

How Cleantech Civils Added Value

The plant sits in an environmentally sensitive location beside the Srah stream and Lough Mask, both of ecological importance. Our team implemented all mitigation measures set out in the project’s Natura Impact Statement. These included silt and pollution controls, managed refuelling and storage areas, and protection of watercourses during earthworks and drainage installation. The works were carried out on a live, operational plant that supplies water to a large part of the county. Our engineers and project manager worked closely with Veolia, the plant operators and the mechanical and electrical contractors. Together they sequenced tie-ins to existing infrastructure, managed interfaces between trades, and kept the plant in service throughout construction. All tanks were hydrostatically tested and signed off before handover. The site was completed to a high standard, with full civil finishes and landscaping. Cleantech Civils is proud to have helped deliver this upgrade for Uisce Éireann and the people of Co. Mayo.

How Cleantech Civils Added Value

We were proud to be involved in every aspect of this exciting Irish construction project from start to finish, which kicked off with the introduction of value engineering proposals for discussion. Through collaboration and commitment, the project was a great success. The client was particularly pleased with the main car park, constructed upon soft peat and supported by layers of geogrids and terrams. Through this particular civil engineering plan, we avoided the need to extract soft material and replace it with suitable fill.

One of the biggest challenges our team faced here was the need to work on multiple project elements simultaneously. However, multitasking without compromising quality is our team’s forte. From groundworks to primary construction, sewers and watermains, we left no stone unturned in constructing a flawless infrastructure in every way. We also included a reservoir and pump station, with M&E and rising mains for all sewerage and potable water to connect the site’s infrastructure along 4km of public roads.
