| Client: | ESB Networks |
| Principal Contractor: | Cleantech Civils |
| Location: | Urlingford, Kilkenny |
Cleantech Civils were commissioned to carry out all civils works associated with the construction of a new 38kV modular station at Urlingford.
Key Features of our Scope of Works
Enabling Works
- Excavation of 9,000m3 to the base of peat (~3m), replace with engineered fill and surcharge to the top of the proposed platform to accelerate the consolidation of the soft silt/clay stratum.
Main Works
- Removal of surcharge material and site levelling.
- Construction of 3No. concrete foundations with basement for 38 kV and MV modular switchrooms and modular control room including access platforms to modules and basements.
- Construction of RC bunds for 2No. power transformers.
- Construction of foundations for NER and LBFM.
- Power ducting associated with transformers, 38kV and MV circuits within the station footprint.
- Installation of control ducting, surface drainage, compound lighting and other site service works including chambers.
- Finishes to compound including palisade fencing and gate, hardcore roadway, trenching for earth grid and compound stone surfacing.
- Finishes to site including concrete post and rail fence, access road, entrance gates and landscaping.

How Cleantech Civils Added Value
Located within an existing industrial park, the Cleantech Civils team undertook an extensive earthworks operation, excavating 9,000m³ to the base of the peat layer (approximately 3m deep). This was followed by a strategic replacement of the excavated peat with engineered fill and surcharging the upper section of the proposed platform to expedite the consolidation of the soft silt/clay stratum. Subsequently, the team efficiently removed surcharge material and conducted thorough site leveling. To address the challenge of deep excavation in close proximity to existing structures, Cleantech Civils implemented an innovative solution that minimised vibration impact. The earth-reinforced detail was installed using the drag box method as an alternative to sheet piling. Coordination with licensed landfill facilities ensured precise material allocation.
During the settlement period, we conducted surveys to monitor subsidence at specified surface movement survey points and datum points, showcasing a proactive approach to site management and ground integrity.
A crucial element entailed channeling the site drainage into the industrial park’s stormwater drainage system. This necessitated the deployment of Traffic Management to oversee vehicular and pedestrian movement, effectively managing the flow during the installation of control ducting and drainage works. To address potential storm events, a hydro break manhole was strategically installed, complemented by a storm attenuation system capable of handling a 1 in a 100-year storm event. A pump was integrated to facilitate efficient dewatering of the attenuation system when required.
